The official Web home of the Policy Internship Program, University of Virginia, School of Engineering and Applied Science

Dear SEAS Students,

Would you like to write briefing papers for the president's science advisor?   Meet the director of the National Science Foundation, the president of the National Academy of Engineering, or the chief justice of the Supreme Court?

Our interns have done all these things and more.

Our program is for undergraduates in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia who want to learn more about the world of science and technology policy through hands-on experience.

Our interns can look forward to high-level placements, important work, a speaker series featuring top policy makers, a stipend, and room and board. They work in Washington, Richmond, or Paris.

Will one of them be you? Please check out our web site and, if the program looks right for you, submit an application.

Sincerely,

Edmund Russell,
Associate Professor
of Science, Tech. & Soc.

Now in Paris!
In the summer of 2008, third-year Tallie Faircloth will be interning in Paris, working in the Europe office of the National Science Foundation, which monitors developments in science and engineering in all the European countries (including Russia) and the European Union in Brussels.

In the summer of 2007, current fourth-year Christine Devlin held this position, marking the first time the program placed an intern overseas.

The program began in 2000 with a focus on the federal government. In 2006, we expanded to state government by placing an intern in Richmond. Now the program is helping students prepare for the global world of the 21st century by providing hands-on experience in Europe.
