To apply to the
Policy Internship Program, you will need
to submit an application, resume, transcript, and letter of reference
(application and reference form available for download below).
1. We recommend that you learn as much as you can about the program before submitting an application. It will help you to decide if the program suits you and to write a more convincing application.
■
Read the whole web site, including papers written by former interns on policy and on their experiences
■
Attend the information session (see calendar)
■
Talk with
internship alumni
about their experience (they will be available at the
information session and by e-mail)
■
Research
offices
in government, non-government organizations
where you might want to work
2. If you want to go to Paris, take the French Department's language placement
examination
3. Prepare the
application:
■
Download the
application (click on the link above)
■
Type in the
requested information
■
Reformat the
document (if necessary) so it is neat and in a 12-point
roman typeface (e.g., "Times New Roman").
■
Print and sign the application
■
Attach your resume. The resume should summarize your
schooling, work experience, and extracurricular activities at
UVa and in high school.
■
Attach your
transcript (unofficial copy ok)
■
Make four copies and staple each set (so you have five
identical sets of the application, resume, and transcript)
4. Obtain a
letter of reference:
■
Download the form
(click on the link above)
■
Print the form
■
Fill in your
portion
■
Give the form to a
UVA faculty member or administrator, who will put the
completed form in a sealed envelope
■
Pick up the
completed reference form
5. Submit the application:
■
Put the five
application/resume/transcript sets in one large envelope
■
Add the reference
letter (still sealed in its own envelope) to the large
envelope
■
Submit the packet
to the Science, Technology, and Society office (Thornton
Hall A-237). You may submit your packet in person, by
regular mail, or by overnight service so long as the
application arrives on or
before the deadline. The postmark date is irrelevant. Do not submit by email or fax.
A committee will select finalists based on the written applications, interview the finalists, and select the interns.
6. If you are a finalist, come to the interview prepared.
■
Follow the advice in University Career Services' Interviewing For Employment
■
The interview may feature questions from any of the three types listed in the booklet (behavioral, resume-based, and case).
■
Wear clothes appropriate to an interview for a position at a government agency (sport coat or suit and tie for men; skirt, dress, nice pants, or suit for women).
Important: Students who want to intern at the
State Department must submit two applications: one to our program and one to the State Department (using its own forms and procedures).
■
The State Department deadline is November 1, so students interested in this option must apply to the State Department before they apply to us. It is the applicant's responsibility to meet this deadline.
■
The State Department is absolutely inflexible on its application requirement and deadline. If you are not accepted into their program, we cannot place you there.
■
We make decisions independently. If you are accepted into our program but not into the State Department, we will find you another placement. It is possible that an applicant will be accepted into the State Department but not into our program.
■
Some other agencies also require separate applications, but they are rare and the deadlines usually come after ours.
