This minor offers engineering students the opportunity to study how technology and business interact. Through coursework in Commerce and Economics, students gain an overview of business enterprise and also study how new products are developed and marketed. In contrast to the STP minor, which explores the role of technology in the larger realms of policy-making and political economy, the engineering business minor focuses on decision-making within a company or organization. Overall, the minor serves to develop the student's potential as a leader and decision-maker in technology-driven industries.

Where can I find the requirements for the minor?

Interested students may find the minor's current curriculum currently maintained here.

When Can I Apply for the Minor?

Beginning in academic year 2009-10, students can no longer declare the minor throughout the year but must apply during the month of October in their second year. Doing so helps us match student demand with the number of seats available in the required courses.

We will be accepting applications from the following classes in these time periods:

Class of 2012: 1-23 October 2009 — Click HERE to download application

Class of 2013: October 2010

Students in the classes of 2010 and 2011 were required to declare the minor before 1 May 2009.

Students from the class of 2012 should submit their applications by placing them in a special box in the STS Department Office (Thornton A237). All applications are due by 5 PM on October 23, 2009. Note that we are accepting applications only from the class of 2012.

When can I learn about the selection process for the class of 2012?

We will be holding briefing sessions at the following times:

Monday, 12 October, 11.30-12, Rodman Room

Monday, 19 October, 5-5.30 PM, Rodman Room

What if I Want to Get an Early Start on the Minor?

It is recommended that you take ECON 2010 or 2020 since you can take these courses without being enrolled in the minor. We also suggest that you look for an internship or job during the summer that helps you to learn about careers that combine business and engineering.

Who should I contact if I have questions about the minor?

Please email Professor W. Bernard Carlson or the associate program director Laura Kolar.
